The Bombay Greenway Project
The railway corridors that cut Mumbai apart, reimagined as a 114 km park that stitches it together.
The Greenway proposes a continuous public landscape along Mumbai's railway lines: about 1,000 acres of new public space, used for walking, cycling, play, markets and urban farming, while trains continue to run beneath and alongside.
It allows for the multiplicity of uses a modern city should expect from its public spaces: cultural and retail re-invigoration, east–west connectivity, environmental restoration and a green transport solution. Outdoor cafés, restaurants and shops generate activity and raise the value of properties along the tracks.
A cycle-sharing scheme lets people walk, cycle and take the train to their destination. The corridor offers large rainwater-harvesting potential, faster train services and upgraded stations, a reduced carbon footprint, and daily markets for every neighbourhood it passes.
