The Bombay Coastal Project

Mumbai has 167 km of continuous coastline. Only 33 km of it is open to the public.

The Bombay Coastal Project proposes a continuous coastal esplanade with unrestricted public access, revitalising the waterfront and with it the city's social and cultural life.

New visual, physical and recreational connections to the sea would carry daily markets, open-air bistros, gathering spaces, play areas, sports grounds and open-air theatres, turning a commuting route into the city's cultural spine. Cultural uses can grow around the historic forts along the coast.

The proposal links the existing esplanades at Bandstand, Bandra Reclamation, Mahim Beach, Prabhadevi Beach and Worli Seaface into one contiguous public space for movement and leisure.
