Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road
Same road, less damage
A study of what the BMC's own documents show about the Versova–Bhayandar Coastal Road, and four changes that would serve Mumbai better: same road, less damage.
We are not against roads. This road, as designed, makes choices that are not technically necessary, removes mangroves that the city's own Climate Action Plan calls essential flood protection, and is built for high-speed motor traffic, with no bus lanes, cycle tracks or footpaths in the tender drawings, while the neighbourhood roads Mumbai already planned remain unbuilt.
The road is being built. What is still open is the unbuilt stretches, the interchange designs, the construction footprint, the extras, and how restoration is enforced. The study sets out four changes: complete the missing links first; simplify the coastal road; stop using the mangroves as a construction site; and publish the alternatives analysis.
