Mahalaxmi Station – Jacob Circle

Two short underpasses turn a congested road into a 1.7-acre pedestrian street, and eight roads become seven again.

Traffic converges on the Mahalaxmi Station junction from three directions, to and from Jacob Circle, locally known as Saat Rasta, the seven roads. Two underpasses towards Jacob Circle complete the missing links from Dr. E. Moses Road and take the load off Bapurao Jagtap Road.

The road becomes a 1.7-acre pedestrian space connecting two mass-transit modes, the Monorail at Jacob Circle and Western Railway at Mahalaxmi, to the benefit of the public and institutional buildings around it.

The new street meets the proposed Greenway at Mahalaxmi Station; a next phase would join the two into a much larger public space.

Proposed by Bombay Greenway in 2012 and offered to the BMC pro bono. The city has since taken up parts of this design.
