The Steps, Bandra
St. Stephen's Steps
A thirty-year dumping ground below St. Stephen's Church, remade as Mumbai's first true 24×7 pedestrian square.
St. Stephen's Church is a historic landmark in Bandra. The Steps align directly with the church gate, and every design move responds to its surroundings: an 88 m long, 15.3 m high and about 12 m wide concrete stair with a ramp alongside, making a barrier-free public space.
The flight breaks at a central landing into a gathering place. An open-air amphitheatre and a children's play area invite community events and everyday recreation. At street level the design adds a zebra crossing, raised tables on both sides and bollards to protect the strip along the road, and folds the setback of Le Papillon Apartments into the park.
The ramp gives step-free access to cyclists, skaters, senior citizens and people with disabilities. Lighting and signage bring out the history of the place.
Designed by Abraham John Architects through Bombay Greenway and built by BMC H West Ward between 2017 and 2019, The Steps is cared for today by the Steps Cultural Foundation, which runs the annual Festival at The Steps.
